West needed a permanent home. After remodeling an old high school science room and then abandoned downtown space that had been rumored to have once served as a house of ill-repute, and being ultimately forced to move from both, we wanted to fix-up a place of our own and not lose it.
Additionally, Pete Halberstadt, West’s founder was working diligently to spearhead a revitalization of Alameda’s historic Park Street downtown business district. That would mean only higher rents if he succeeded, leaving himself largely to blame if West was displaced yet again.
After numerous efforts to purchase historic buildings, West was able to acquire the former Alameda French Bakery and essentially reconstruct its interior.
