What’s often overlooked is the relationship between visual and verbal messaging. The best Graphic Designers work closely with copywriters and/or content developers to ensure the written message is captured graphically. In the case of the City of Alameda’s campaign to prevent oil spills from DIY auto and boat mechanics, West captured the downside of an oil spill — spoiling our local environment — with the actual agent of that destruction, oil, in a single graphic element that became visually synonymous with the larger more detailed message.
